The AES Corporation case describes a situation in which the executive leadership of an independent power producer tries to balance the conflicting strategies of a) the social and environmental values that he has built the company on, and b) the company's adopted business strategy of using coal-fired power plants to deliver the "least cost" energy to electric utility consumers.

Teaching Note
This case gives students a basic understanding of life-cycle analysis and the issues involved when integrating life-cycle tools into the product design process.

This case shows us how AT&T becomes a leader in E&S and describes a project in which "classic" TQM techniques are used to eliminate an environmental hazard.

This case describes a situation in which the leaders of the recycling group of a major German automobile manufacturer must analyze two separate but related questions: how should BMW modify the vehicle take-back infrastructure and what should the company do with recovered materials.

5. THE BOEING COMPANY: ENVIRONMENTAL MITIGATION COSTS
Teaching Note
This case examines the more than $50 million in environmental mitigation costs that Everett imposed on Boeing before allowing it to expand the aircraft manufacturing plant. With this case, students determine the accounting treatment of these mitigation costs for financial reporting, cost accounting, and federal tax reporting.

6. COOCAFE R.L.
Teaching Note
The objective of this case is to introduce the student to the dangers of a company making environmental claims for a product that is not completely environmentally benign.

7. DANISH BOTTLES (A)
By declaring that all containers of beer and soft drinks must be returnable, the Court of the European Communities had to decide whether Denmark had failed to fulfill its free trade duties under the SEA, or whether Denmark's decision was justified on the grounds of environmental protection.

Teaching Note
As to the implementation of TQEM in the Utilities Division at Kodak Park, the case deals with the issues of implementing new programs in an era of downsizing, the problems associated with developing long-term preventive environmental programs, and the difficulties of determining the costs and benefits of environmental management programs.

This case study is designed to be used in discussions of management accounting or control and organizational behavior. Fred Schoeneborn, the Mobil's Facilities Management Coordinator, holds no real right over the facilities managers. But he succeeded in making them undertaking a daunting task. His success can be seen as a valuable model for similar efforts.

24. POLAROID CORPORATION: Toxics Use and Waste Reduction
Teaching Note
The TUWR program called for reductions of ten percent of the use of toxic chemicals and the volumes of its chemical waste per year over a period of five consecutive years. Polaroid initiated it. This case reviews the events leading up to the establishment of the TUWR program and summarizes the progress made during its first few years.

The case can be used: 1) as a follow-on discussion on how keeping environmental costs in manufacturing overhead can distort management's understanding of their product's manufacturing costs 2) as a springboard for discussing financial risks and liabilities that are often ignored in traditional costing systems 3) as an opportunity to discuss options available to small medium-size business with limited capital for addressing substantial environmental impacts arising from their operations.

Teaching Note
The managers must analyze and choose between two re-designs of one of the firm's strategic product lines. One design offers a higher return but is potentially environmentally harmful, while the other is not as attractive financially but is environmentally preferable. The challenge to the firm is to evaluate qualitative data and incorporate it into its decision-making.

Teaching Note
The case presents an organization that appears to have or to be in the process of implementing progressive environmental management policies. While WEPCO had done an excellent job of putting new environmental written policy statements in place and forming interdepartmental task forces, it has had problems implementing its program and achieving a balance between emphasis on external and internal environmental issues.

31. WEYRHAEUSER COMPANY: The Next 100 Years

This case focuses on the company's development since the turn of the century into a leading forest product company and the strategic challenges it faces as it tries to implement sustainable forestry.
