For the purpose of establishing cooperative ties
in environmental protection, solving regional environmental problems
common to China, Japan and Korea, promoting local sustainable
development, discussing and working out a regional environmental
protection action plan, and following the proposal of the Japanese
government, in 1999, the three countries held the first Tripartite
Environmental Minister Conference in Korea. The conference is
held annually in one of the three countries in turn, the fifth
Tripartite Environmental Minister Conference having been convened
between Dec. 13-14, 2003 in Beijing. The Head of the SEPA XIE
Zhenhua, the Japanese Minister of the Environment Yuriko KOIKE,
and the Korean Minister of the Environment Mycong Sook Han attended
the meeting, each representing their respective ministries. XIE
Zhenhua, representing the hosting country, chaired the conference.
One of the projects decided upon at the Tripartite
Environmental Minister Conference was the Tripartite Environmental
Education Network (TEEN) project. This project aims at establishing
a network for China, Japan and Korea in the field of environmental
education, in order to push forward the exchange and cooperation
between environmental education institutions of the three countries,
and thus to commonly promote environmental education development.
Within the framework of this project, a ‘Sino-Japanese-Korean
Tripartite Data Bank of Environmental Education Institutions’
was established as the base for exchange and cooperation in this
field. The CEEC is the implementing institution for this project
in China.
