No other periods of time in human history has witnessed a more increasingly faster social and technological change pace than our era, along side with an unprecedented dilating ambition and yearning for controlling ,or more blatantly speaking, conquering our surroundings. For some time, it’s fortunately for us to embrace the desirable outcome as a result of our active participation in enhancing our nature, however, at much higher frequency; nature hits us by this or that irony which highly runs against our original decent intention. In this article, the author impresses us by such two ironies and provides us with a valuable chance to inspect and deliberate on human being’s multi-faceted role in coordinating the natural systems.

Among these roles, the most important to my credit should be to act as a temperate and amenable species which in a large measure means making use of the science, technology, environment and resources available to us reasonably and discreetly. So many issues concerning the completeness and continuity of the ecosystem such as the “invasive species”, the genetically modified food (beans, tomatoes, rice etc.) which have aroused swamp after swamp public controversy may mostly falls into the category of revising our radical imagination and further question about whether we ought to put it into practice. To everyone’s dismay, there exists no definite answer to this question in that the pursuit of the result is a permanent, non-concluding process, yet at the same time we are convinced that the increasing complex nature of the natural issues calls for the combination of cross-curricular cooperation and the mutual penetration of different research field leading by different researchers. For “invasive species”, experts in ecological, environmental, biological, geological field should further the collaboration in order to complement each other’s knowledge vacuum thus to avoid the similar ironical admonition as revealed from the introduction of spotted knapweed to North America as possible; For genetically modified food, vastly differing assessment and evaluation should be strike to a balance among scholars dedicated in agriculture, biology, food science, medicine, ethic and so on .Simply put, any scientific leap or innovation interrelated with human, environment ,ecosystem requires a prudent, long-term, and comprehensive consideration so as to reduce the risks as much as possible.

The second role of humanity has much to do with its reforming and creative capability which entails us to equip different groups of people with basic knowledge, professional skills as well as an open-minded and critical perspective in addressing the existing environmental and ecological problems. Whether we would like to admit or not, people have a natural tendency to subject to the stereotypical ideas, well-established attitudes; specifically on the natural issues, not only the mass public but also the leading authority are sometimes vulnerable to and thus easily manipulated by the popular environmental protection trend and action manner. Regrettably, the resultant outcome generated from these spontaneous impulsions often goes remotely from our prediction. In the case of the great skua described by the author, the governmental measures to ensure the population of certain kinds of fish seems stand on the attenuating point of caring for a unique species , though decent the intention may be , a chain of subsequent negative ecological responses are omitted. Thus it’s no wonder to accept a counterproductive result—no contributions to the continual sustain of the biodiversity, rather, a great loss in the fecundity of the seabirds. In retrospection of this case ,the governmental policy are vulnerable to be blamed for its precariousness and the natural unpredictability is put forward as an excuse for human ignorance; on the other hand ,in my view, should we put the whole issue in the environmental protection atmosphere which have been slightly excessively highlighted in recent decades so that somewhat of sensibility have been overshadowed? Apart from the two roles mentioned above ,the last role we ought to bear in mind is that in the process of improving our surroundings, human beings are doomed to lag little behind the pace of the ecological evolution ;in other words, in the game to utilize the nature, we have no say to institute the game rules ,since the rule is the natural evolutionary mechanism and the natural historical orientation which have long been determined by nature itself .Once consciously recognize this, we will no longer lament on the continual failure in establish ourselves on the Mars, have no more regret on the disillusion of creating a self-reliant small earth on the planet earth such as the biosphere II.

So, my dear fellow, it’s high time that we human beings redefined our role in the natural system, not only for the stake of the survival of our future descendents but also the harmonious development of the whole ecosystem—simply put, the dominant pose which has long been taken by humanity in utilizing natural should be substituted by a more friendly role with equal position with all the living species on our earth.
